Somewhere along the way, retailers decided that spending time with friends and family during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend wasn’t quite as profitable as encouraging us to punch each other for cheap flatscreens at big box stores before dawn. Thus, Black Friday became a thing, forcing America’s retail workers to shake off their food comas and open stores around the country as early as midnight.
But a few stores refuse to cave to such injustice. Outdoor retailer REI hopes to start a movement with its #OptOutside campaign, electing to close its doors on Black Friday and pay its workers to take a day off and spend some time in nature — or, you know, with their families.
Here are a few Austin businesses we’d like to recognize for making the same gesture by remaining closed on Black Friday. If we’ve forgotten any local spots, let us know — this is an idea worth spreading.
