We’ve known for some time that a new Marriott Hotel was on the way at the corner of Cesar Chavez and Trinity Streets near the Austin Convention Center, but it seems the project is finally moving forward in earnest, with demolition permits filed at the block and new renderings released at a recent city meeting.
Here’s what we know about the building so far: It will rise to 31 stories with 613 total rooms, along with multiple bars and restaurants, in about 534,000 total square feet. The building will also hold 60,000 square feet of meeting space and 257 parking spaces in an underground garage.
Looking at the plans and renderings so far makes the project feel like a slightly downsized, convention center-focused version of the nearby JW Marriott.
One further interesting detail: The nearby convention center’s expansion plans may involve the Marriott pretty heavily. The center’s long-range master plan document includes a drawing of an expanded convention center connecting to the hotel via skybridge, which seem to be all the rage lately in this district.
