Library Site

The lighting and fans on the building’s outdoor porch section are from the building’s principal interior designer Joe Rondinelli, who works at Shepley Bulfinch Architects. The young adult section’s integrated desks really get me. Hey, it’s a city building — that 1970s civic design aesthetic had to show up somewhere. It’s fairly awe-inspiring and not far from something by M.C. Escher — or Harry Potter, if that’s your thing. It’s fairly awe-inspiring and not far from something by M.C. Escher — or Harry Potter, if that’s your thing. Austrian artist Christian Moeller designed this piece of public art for the library’s atrium. It’s called CAW and apparently represents a grackle. Moeller says he fell in love with Austin’s most common bird due to its resemblance to the black crows of his homeland. He must get a kick out of H-E-B parking lots. I can’t get enough of the windows and scale-like cladding of the walls for the library’s children’s section. It’s nice when public buildings actually let architects and designers have fun. A better look at the children’s book section. If I were six years old again, they would have to drag me out of this room kicking and screaming. These valves, Gillum explains, were salvaged from the deconstruction of the Green Water Treatment Plant by Cindy Jordan, the library’s project manager. Now kids can turn them all day long without ruining anyone's water supply. This section also includes a laser-cut metal shade outside the window with enough book and reading-related quotes from famous public figures to keep you and your Instagram busy for a long, long time. Seriously, these light fixtures are straight out of Dr. Strangelove’s War Room, which makes me love them even more. There’s a lot going on in this building — so much, you might forget it’s a library until you see this handy reminder. The exterior of the building facing Cesar Chavez appears to be relatively isolated from the adjacent road noise due to its recessed design. The building also includes a state of the art concert and event space. It’s extremely well-insulated and SXSW needs to start booking bands there yesterday. Along with its Cookbook cafe, the library features a cooking demonstration space with amphitheater-style seating. Gillum says it may very well be the first of its kind. Adjacent to the building’s east courtyard is a bike lockup with some cleverly-designed racks. A view of the building’s eastern exterior. Golden arches certainly pop against all that blue. One of the floors that will soon be occupied by bookshelves. I can’t get enough of the light fixtures. The view east into downtown over the site’s new bridge over Shoal Creek. The courtyard on the east side of the building is shaping up to be one of Austin’s best new public outdoor spaces. I’m possibly a little too fascinated by the wooden tile flooring being laid down in certain sections of the library. A closer look at some of the lighting underneath the atrium’s many staircases. You’ll be surprised by some of the building’s bold design choices. There’s a lot of wood, bringing a human element to a variety of city building that often has none. Gallum says the tiles, which are made of Texas mesquite, are intended to give the building a sense of belonging to the natural environment. One of the floors that will soon be occupied by bookshelves. I can’t get enough of the light fixtures. The library includes several work spaces that can be reserved for personal use. They’re stuffing a lot of technology into these walls — you can see where the digital access panels are going to go. There's no shortage of public art outside, but I think I'm actually partial to the electrical substation behind the fence. Getting a full impression of the building’s central atrium requires a lot of angles. An aerial view of the Shoal Creek bridge at the east end of the site gives a better sense of its place. The view corridor it creates into downtown is going to get Instagram famous before you know it. The library’s rooftop courtyard and garden. It’s a cloudy day, but I already see the potential — it’s going to be one of the best publicly accessible views of this area of downtown. Some of the garden’s greenery is already doing pretty well up here. Even the more mundane design details of the building are notable — these walls in the building’s administrative office section are completely modular, allowing staff to rearrange the office’s rooms as their future needs dictate. Seriously can’t get enough of the lights in this place. Here’s what the mesquite floor will look like once it’s stained. I kind of like the throwback look here in the young adult books section.
