It’s been 15 years since the Trail Foundation took over the upkeep and improvement of Austin’s iconic Hike-and-Bike trail, and to celebrate, the nonprofit recently announced 15 planned improvement projects to be completed along the 10-mile path over the next five years.
Two of the projects are general improvements for the entire thing — updated signage for better wayfinding and environmental restoration intended to bolster the parkland’s natural ecosystem by removing invasive species and preventing erosion — but the other 13 are specific upgrades at various locations along the trail.
To make sure you’re up to date on what’s planned, we’ve mapped these projects with descriptions of what’s in store, along with images when they’re relevant. Word to the wise, you can click on each image to make it bigger.
As Austin grows, it’s critical that we pay close attention to the quality of the trail that’s stitching everything together, especially in the interest of improving connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists — maybe you’re more optimistic than me, but I don’t see the traffic around here getting better overnight, so the trail is a valuable resource for avoiding it completely. We’ll be sure to keep up with progress on these updates in the years to come.
