As Austinites practice social distancing measures such as working from home to slow the coronavirus pandemic, the latest stay-at-home orders announced last week for the city and county requiring facial coverings in public threw us for a bit of a loop.
Matthew McConaughey’s bandit alter ego helped explain the finer points — most importantly, owing to a shortage of cloth face masks, it’s okay to cover your nose and mouth with a bandana or scarf instead. (You can also cut up a t-shirt and make your own mask, but that sounds like a whole thing.)

That means there’s a whole world of local flair you can use for an Austin-themed face mask, which at least brings a little novelty to the table. If you’re just looking for plain cloth face masks, here are a few local options — but for something a little wackier, see our selection of makeshift masks below:
Austin Motel Bandanas
South Congress Avenue’s favorite hotel has several bandana options for sale at the moment, some a little more fashion-forward and one directly supporting its staff. Wouldn’t kill you to get more than one of them, would it?
Barton Creek Greenbelt Bandana
Sold by South Congress boutique Parts & Labour, this bandana depicting swimming holes on the Barton Greek Greenbelt is from Austin clothing company Tanked Apparel.
Austin Eastciders Bandana
Even if you can’t drink in a bar at the moment, you can still find bandanas for sale repping a few local beverages, including this little Austin Eastciders number.
Deep Eddy Vodka / Other Austin Beverage Bandanas
The enterprising local selling this Deep Eddy Vodka bandana on EBay knows what’s up, having added “Make Mask” to the listing name — but we can’t help but point out there are some cheaper options available.
Austin City Limits Bandanas
There are a few bandana options when it comes to Austin’s most well-known music festival, including this more traditional model and a fairly inscrutable eagle-themed one — unclear if it’s official merch (maybe when the Eagles headlined?) but the seller lives in Austin anyway, so who cares?
University of Texas “Gaiter” Scarf
This piece of Longhorn swag is one of those stretchy polyester deals rather than either a bandana or traditional scarf, so it’s probably pretty comfortable.
Texas Capitol Scarf
Coming at you straight from the Capitol Gift Shop, this scarf — easier for some to wear than a bandana, since it has more fabric — is about as Texas as they come.
