Central Austin Development Roundup: We’re Going Downtown Again

Show of hands, who thought we would still be doing this in October? One interesting side effect of the pandemic, if you’re one of the chosen ones lucky enough to still be working from home, is that when you finally do go downtown you’ll likely be struck by just how much progress some of our more prominent tower projects have made down here in the last several months. It’s plausible, depending on how things go this winter, that someone will eventually go back to their workplace and see a whole new tower outside their window that wasn’t there when they left. Plus ça change, as they say.

Indeed Tower

Though we’ve already taken a long, gauzy look at the wonderful Indeed Tower project by venerable Texas developers Trammell Crow Company, the dramatic installation of the structure’s crown going on this week has everyone paying more attention than usual. As far as tower crowns go, this one’s pretty tall, and even though we could tell that from the earliest illustrations of the building it’s still pretty impressive to see it going up in real life, adding even more exciting diagonals to this exceedingly angular structure. If you consider yourself a crown enthusiast — and it seems many locals do — you’ll be keeping an eye on this thing for the next few weeks.

6 X Guadalupe

Austin’s future tallest tower by developers Lincoln Property Company and Kairoi Residential will bring 66 floors of offices, residences, and retail to 600 Guadalupe Street by 2022 — and the project has finally risen its core past the ground level and a bit higher than that, as you can see in the photo above. You may recall the 6 X Guadalupe site being a pretty big pit not so long ago:

405 Colorado

Here’s a view of the 25-floor office and parking extravaganza by Brandywine Realty Trust at 405 Colorado that we haven’t seen before — its backside, which faces north and is visible on the right side of the structure from the perspective of this photo, will thankfully soon be covered by the Tower 5C project, because despite our vigorous defense of the rest of the building it’s not a very nice-looking side.

Fifth and Brazos 

The 31-floor mixed-use hotel and apartment tower with ground-floor retail currently underway from developers Magellan Development Group and Ryan Companies at the northeast corner of Fifth and Brazos Streets is looking good — especially its design at the street level, as seen above. Check out the difference between the building and its rendering below, which is pretty close:

Natiivo / 44 East Avenue

Looking south down East Avenue, we get a family portrait of two nearby towers — in the foreground, the rapidly-rising 33-floor Natiivo home-sharing project by Pearlstone Partners, and behind it the 49-floor 44 East Avenue condo tower by the fun-loving Canadian transplants at Intracorp. You also get a view of all the trucks parked here, presumably owned by the folks working on the building. That’s a lot of trucks!

Alexan Waterloo f.k.a. Alexan Capitol

Once known as Alexan Capitol, this 29-floor apartment project by Trammell Crow Residential seems to be going by the name Alexan Waterloo these days. In our efforts to get a photo of the tower from a fresh angle, we ended up creating a very artsy juxtaposition between old and new. In the background we’ve got the Alexan, currently getting bricked up at 700 East 11th Street — and in the foreground, you see the ongoing demolition of the Brackenridge campus at Block 164, making way for an office complex project by the locals at Gensler Austin. The developer’s latest info has the Alexan tower open for business by July 2021. The Block 164 project, last we checked, was scheduled for completion by early 2022.

Block 185

Last but not least, another Trammell Crow Company project is currently rising at Block 185, the alleged future offices of Google despite the pandemic throwing the world of office space for a wicked curve. The 35-floor tower’s showstopping sailboat design from the firm of the late César Pelli is starting to show as construction continues — and speaking of wicked curves, even without the exterior glass you can already tell from current progress at the site that this development is going to be exciting to watch all the way through. We’ll leave capturing this particularly striking tower’s angles to a professional, friend of the site Patrick Wong:
