According to an announcement by the HOA management team of the downtown Austin condo tower the Independent, the building’s divisive crown will officially power up its lighting system at dusk on Friday, February 7 — that’s tomorrow night. From now on, according to the announcement, the building will “light up each night and remain lit until dawn through the use of a photocell sensor.”
The 58-story building, currently the tallest in town and known by many Austinites simply as the Jenga Tower, opened to its residents last year, but the crown lighting took a little longer — we only received an official confirmation from the tower’s developers that it was even happening less than a month ago.

You might have already noticed some tests taking place with the crown’s LED lighting system over the last few weeks, as seen in the tweet above, along with some very dramatic use of color — check out some Instagram photos below of the tower lighting system, including a red color scheme straight out of r/EvilBuildings and a view inside the crown itself, taken during testing by local lighting firm Light Support:
Of course, this spiffy new lighting system won’t satisfy the people who don’t like the way the crown looks during the day, but who cares? We need more cool nighttime illumination on downtown towers anyway, so this is great news for all of us. We’re excited to see everything the crown is capable of — and we don’t have long to wait.
