The boutique hotel boom on SoCo continues with the announcement of a second Kimber Modern development, a three-story, 34 room hotel spearheaded by Austinite Kimber Cavendish and designed by local firm Maker Architects.

Currently known as the Kimber Modern SoCo, the development will join a small army of boutique hotels along South Congress, which includes the aptly-named South Congress Hotel, the original Kimber Modern, and developer Liz Lambert’s Hotel San Jose, Hotel St. Cecilia, and recently-announced Hotel Magdalena.
The development will occupy land directly behind local taco institution Guero’s — not unlike the original Kimber Modern’s perch behind the iconic Continental Club venue.
Space is tight around here, y’all.

Underground garages are certainly one way to solve parking issues on SoCo. Can we add, say, a few more hundred spaces? Photo courtesy of Maker Architects.
The site, formerly occupied by Eco-Wise and Vulcan Video, will include 68 parking spaces in an underground garage. The hotel’s plans also include a bar, event space, and a single retail space on the ground floor of the building, situated at the corner of Eva and Elizabeth Streets.

With all these hotels springing up in the area, it’s easy to forget that not so long ago, Downtown Austin was considered to be suffering from a shortage of available rooms for rent. That shouldn’t be a problem now, as hospitality developments continue to spring up all around the city with seemingly no end in sight.
