Central Austin Development Roundup: Towers, Towers, and More Towers

The hits just keep on coming, y’all. We’ve got an all-star roundup of local development items revved up for you this week, with almost every update related to a tower on the way in downtown Austin. Giddyup:

The 32-story mixed-use hotel and residential tower by Magellan and Ryan Companies at Fifth & Brazos Streets is really happening. We already knew that, but it’s extra happening now that its site is fenced, cleared, and currently diggin’ away even as we speak. The dual-branded Thompson and tommie hotels at the building are targeted for opening by early Q4 2020, with the building’s residential component delivered in three phases that will also conclude in Q4 2020. The project’s final completion is expected in Q1 2021.

Speaking of hotels, the 31-story Marriott Austin Downtown underway at the corner of Cesar Chavez and Trinity Streets has now risen enough to be extremely visible from the street. They’re putting 613 rooms into this thing!

Sometimes I feel like downtown Austin has more hotel rooms than the world has people, but it wasn’t always that way! The project’s expected to deliver in 2020, but for the time being, check out this very nifty virtual tour of its pool deck:

The mixed-use office and apartment tower by Endeavor Real Estate Group at 91-93 Red River Street in the Rainey Street District is gearing up. Demolition on the current office building was supposed to start by now, but perhaps they’re still tearing out the asbestos inside. Either way, fences are up at the property and someone dropped off a excavator in the parking lot like twenty minutes after I took the photo above, so this thing is probably coming down in days.

The massive excavation for the 36-story Block 71 office tower by Trammell Crow Company is complete, and this big pit is slowly filling with concrete. It’s a fun project to watch, to say the least. This one is expected to deliver by March 2021.

Hotel ZaZa / Gables Republic Square

The crane is finally down at the Hotel ZaZa / Gables Republic Square project at 401 Guadalupe Street. We’ve given this project a lot of grief recently for its incredibly protracted and mysterious construction timeline, but just like that, there’s a sign up at the corner of Fourth and Lavaca Streets teasing an opening date sometime in 2019:

Barring any other catastrophes, we kind of expected this building to open in 2019 already, so this doesn’t get us very far. Still, it’s something!

Canopy by Hilton

Last but not least is another hotel, the six-story Canopy by Hilton project under construction at 612 West Sixth Street. Bringing 140 rooms to the entertainment district, this one’s expected to open by January 2020.

Demolition of the former garage at the site is complete, and fences are up with work already underway — there’s not much to see at the moment, but thanks to an existing rendering, we already know what we’re getting from architects Lake/Flato:
